West Midlands Cyber

Grow & Scale

Helping cyber businesses progress

The West Midlands is capable of creating cyber firms. The challenge is helping more of them progress beyond micro-business and consultancy-led growth.

The progression pathway

Four stages, each with a different constraint. Most regional support addresses the first; the Cluster exists because too few companies reach the fourth.

Starting

Founder onboarding, peer support, early business guidance, community introductions and a route into the Hub.

Validating

Proposition development, customer discovery, expert feedback, pilot opportunities and design partnerships.

Growing

Commercial mentoring, sales and procurement readiness, talent support, partner introductions and regional visibility.

Scaling

Investment readiness, strategic buyer access, leadership development, scale-up mentoring and national or international opportunities.

Why progression, not entry

Regional mapping identified 147 cyber organisations, of which 92 are micro-enterprises and only five have external equity investment. The region can create cyber companies. Too few become nationally significant scale-ups.

Founder peer support

Confidential peer groups with founders facing the same decisions.

Commercial validation

Testing the proposition against real buyers, not just advisors.

Procurement readiness

Understanding what enterprise and public buyers actually require.

Investment readiness

Preparing properly for the conversations that follow.

Access this support through the Hub

Clinics, mentoring, scale-up support and programmes are delivered at and by the West Midlands Cyber Hub. The Cluster sets the direction; the Hub runs the sessions.
